Catholic Schools Week

January 27, 2012

Catholic Schools Week will be held next week, January 30th -February 3rd. It is one of the highlights of the year at St. Anthony Catholic School. This year’s theme is “Catholic Schools: Faith. Academics. Service.” What is wonderful about this theme is that it expresses three priorities that make Catholic schools stand out from other educational institutions. We’ve planned a variety of activities for students, families and community members, and we hope you’ll join us as we celebrate what makes Catholic education unique.

The schedule of activities are:
Sunday, Jan. 29
Mass at 9:30. Students will dress in their uniforms and participate in the Mass as Altar Servers, Lectors, Cantors & Ushers. Parents, parishioners and alumni will be honored. Reid Priestly, St. Anthony graduate and current DHS senior, will speak about the benefits of receiving his education at a Catholic School. The Youth Group will have a breakfast following Mass.

Monday, Jan. 30
‘Put on Your Thinking Cap’ Students can create their own ‘Thinking Cap’ to wear to school. High School students who are St. Anthony Alumni will be present to speak to students about how Catholic school has benefited them.

Tuesday, Jan. 31
‘What I Want to Be’
Students can dress up as their future selves to show their future careers. Community workers will speak with students about how a career serving others benefits everyone.

Wednesday, Feb. 1
‘Saint and Vocation Day’
Students will be encouraged to model a saint or vocation, whether that be a sister, priest or married person. A priest, sister and deacon will share how their vocations came to them and how they were encouraged to live that vocation.

Thursday, Feb. 2
‘Adventures in Reading’
Students are encouraged to dress up as their favorite character from a book. Local author, Tim Dailey, will speak to the students about his new book.

Thursday, Feb. 2 @ 6pm
There will be a HSA meeting, followed by a dinner and open house with students’ projects on display.

Friday, Feb. 3
Students will have an early dismissal at 12:00.

Throughout the week, students who dress up as that days theme, can participate in a contest for the most creative costume!

To emphasize service throughout the week, students will be collecting band-aids, coloring books, crayons, play dough and other craft materials for children who are patients at The Children’s Hospital in Amarillo. This helps the students learn the value of helping others.

Throughout the week, St. Anthony students can be heard on local radio station, KXIT, praying and telling why they love Catholic School.

The annual Scholastic Book Fair will also be held during the week, beginning Sunday following Mass and continuing through Friday afternoon. All books purchased will earn additional books for the school library.

Bishop Zurek will celebrate Mass with the students on Thursday, Feb. 9th at 11 am.

As you can see, Catholic Schools Week will be very busy. We hope to see you and your family at our events.

Also, please remember to say a special ‘Thank You’ to those who help make St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School a success: our pastor Fr. Scott Raef, our teachers, staff administrators, school board, HSA officers, Knights of Columbus, parents, volunteers and sponsors. Through their dedication and commitment, our students are learning in a culture of faith, academics and service that is preparing them for a full life in their families, communities and the Catholic Church.
